What happens during a prenatal visit with your doula ?

Expecting a baby is one of the most exciting (and sometimes overwhelming) experiences of your life. It’s natural to want to be fully prepared and informed every step of the way, especially when it comes to your birth experience.

1. Building a relationship of Trust and Comfort

One of the first things a doula will focus on is building a strong, trusting relationship with you and your spouse. Prenatal visits are all about getting to know one another. Your doula will spend time listening to your birth preferences, your hopes, and any concerns you may have. This is a time to establish a connection where you feel heard and understood, which will help you feel more comfortable during the birth.

Expect to talk about your pregnancy, your family dynamics, and any past birth experiences (if applicable). Your doula will take time to learn about you as a person and as a family, so they can better tailor their support to meet your needs.

2.Discussing Your Birth Plan and Preferences

Every birth is unique, and every person has different preferences for their birth experience. During your prenatal visit, your doula will help you outline your birth plan. While no birth goes exactly as planned, having a plan in place allows you to identify your priorities and prepare for the unexpected.

You might talk about:

  • The type of birth you envision (hospital, birthing center, home birth)

  • Pain management preferences (medications, natural pain relief, etc.)

  • The kind of environment you want for labor (lighting, music, ambiance)

  • Support persons present during labor and delivery

  • Your feelings about interventions (epidurals, inductions, cesarean births, etc.)

Your doula will help you navigate these choices, ensuring you feel empowered and informed in your decision-making process. They will also explain what your options are, helping you understand the pros and cons of each.

3. Providing Education and Information

Prenatal visits with a doula are also a great opportunity to ask questions and get expert guidance. A doula is there to provide you with evidence-based information, helping you understand your options and how they might impact your birth experience.

Topics you might cover include:

  • The stages of labor and what to expect

  • Comfort measures for labor (breathing techniques, movement, positioning)

  • Signs of labor and when to go to the hospital or birthing center

  • Postpartum care and recovery

  • Breastfeeding tips and resources

  • Baby care basics (swaddling, diapering, etc.)

Your doula will be a reliable source of information, answering your questions without judgment, and making sure you feel confident in your knowledge.

4. Providing Physical and Emotional Support

Prenatal visits are also a time for your doula to offer physical and emotional support. They may demonstrate relaxation techniques or comfort measures that can be used during labor, such as massage, breathing exercises, and body positioning.

Many doulas are trained in techniques like acupressure, rebozo, or even belly mapping (a technique that helps locate your baby’s position in the womb). These methods can be incredibly helpful in relieving discomfort during pregnancy and preparing your body for labor.

Emotionally, your doula will create a space for you to express any fears, concerns, or excitement about your upcoming birth. They offer continuous support, providing reassurance and encouragement. Their goal is to ensure you feel mentally and emotionally ready for the big day!

5. Involving your Partner and Family

The prenatal visits aren’t just about you—they’re also about your partner and any other family members who will be part of your birth experience. Your doula will make sure that your partner feels involved, educated, and supported as well. They may guide them on how to best assist you during labor or how to offer comfort during the prenatal period.

Your doula will also help your partner feel empowered in their role as your support person, offering them tools and techniques they can use to help you during labor. A well-supported partner can make a huge difference in how smooth the birth experience goes.

6. Creating a Birth Support Plan

Every family’s needs and circumstances are unique, and your doula will work with you to create a plan that outlines your needs for labor support. This may include how you would like your doula to assist during labor, what role your partner will play, and what specific actions you’d like them to take if certain situations arise.

For example, if you’re planning a natural birth, your doula will have a plan for managing pain without medication, like using massage or different labor positions. If you anticipate needing more medical support, your doula can help communicate your needs with your healthcare team.

Your prenatal visits are also a great time for your doula to remind you that they’re there for you throughout your pregnancy, and even after your baby arrives. They are available to answer any questions or provide support between visits, either by phone, text, or email. Whether it’s a concern about your pregnancy, a question about a specific topic, or just needing a bit of reassurance, your doula will be there for you.

A prenatal visit with a doula is all about building a solid foundation for your birth experience. These visits allow you to discuss your preferences, gain knowledge, receive emotional and physical support, and feel prepared for the journey ahead. By the time you reach the birth of your baby, you’ll feel confident knowing that you have a supportive, informed team beside you every step of the way.

If you’re expecting and considering working with a doula, remember that prenatal visits are an essential part of the process. It’s a time to get to know your doula, understand your options, and create a plan that’s as unique as you are.

By preparing with the support of a doula, you’re setting yourself up for a birth experience that feels informed, empowered, and supported.

Hi, I’m Faye, a doula based in the Central Arkansas Area. I’m here to support you through your birthing journey and help you feel empowered every step of the way.

I know a lot of people would say there isn’t a such thing as a perfect delivery but I would have to disagree but that’s bologna. The perfect delivery is the one God intended just for you. And I know he shares those desires and places them on your heart. Trusting in God and his ability to bring forth delivery is the best way. Isaiah 66 9-11

With love,

Faye G
